If you don't know what 'The Magicians' is, you should! It's based on a series of 3 books by award-winning author Les Grosman. It concerns the students of a secret American college of magic and the somewhat mal-adjusted students who are drawn there to sit the entrance exam. (Yes, publication was put on hold while the whole 'Harry Potter' thing happened). There are five series (it has ended) and whilst the first two approximately go along with the books, the TV series diverges into a different story after that.
Being an older cast than found in most fantasises, there are a lot more mature and darker themes explored. Magic is treated as dangerous, and addictive, with all manner of unintended consequences. The characters are all well-developed and intriguing, plots take surprising and explosive turns and everything is shot through with a dark humour, yet you never feel misled or short-changed by the inevitable shock twists at the end of an episode. The only flaw with the series is that Season 1 ends on an absolute cliff-hanging catastrophe that needs Season 2 to resolve. Otherwise, the breaks between seasons are easier to handle.
I love this show and I'm sad to see it end, but after the rather callously dark direction of Season 4 this takes a return to the more familiarly skewed ways of Brakebills and Fillory again. The ensemble cast regroup in such a way that the storylines really aren't impaired by the loss of one of their number (see end of series 4), though the ramifications of that loss on the individuals are dealt with adroitly by the writing.
There are neat threaded plotlines for each of the characters, highs and lows and shocking and hilarious twists along the way. The build-up to the finale has no shortage of drama and those expecting a Buffy-style musical number or two won't be disappointed. The ending is nicely open-ended and leaves plenty to the imagination, without being frustrating or leaving a ton of threads hanging unanswered.
I was pleased to find this US Blu-Ray seems to be region-free and plays on UK devices. I can't say the same for sure for the rest of the series. Season 1 alone got a UK release. For 2-4 I sought out the Australian releases, which are Blu-Ray region 'B' and also play in Europe (unlike DVDs, where those regions are separate).
So i was skeptical as so many reviews were for the digital copies and not the DVD's i didnt know if it had all the episodes or not but to my suprise, It does. all 13.
The case is a hard plastic case with a disk sleeve [3 Disks] and came in a very clean and un damaged paperback sleeve over the hard case. The disks look to be brand new no smudges or scratches. This is a good purchase for your collection. I am very excited about this. I love this series so much.
Thank you Lev Grossman, And thank you SyFy for funding and helping make this series possible! :D
