Underrated Horror Classic
2020年2月26日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
When it comes to horror movies, there's very few that have held up from the last twenty five years. Whilst the American horror genre was loading itself with annoying jump scare cliches and became more predictable than a WWE wrestling PPV, Asian horror took more unconventional ideas and made some of the wackiest intense horror films out there.
When it comes to Asian horror films, everyone remembers the likes of The Ring and The Grudge. They were after all big hits for Japanese cinema and and rightfully so. They are great films, they even spawned American remakes (which were pretty good overall). There were others out there that deserved a look however. The ones off the top of my head are Dark Water, The Eye and One Missed Call. A selection of films that are just as good as the more famous line up and are well worth your time.
The story for One Missed Call is simple enough. A selection of young adults receive phone calls with an eerie jingle ring tone. The messages they receive predicts their deaths down to the very second. This takes our lead characters into an investigation to stop what's happening before it kills her. One Missed Call, isn't quite your conventional J-horror film. It holds the usual tropes featuring spooky long haired girls but it focuses less on the intense darkness and more on the investigation. Similar to The Ring, it's a "why is it happening and how do we stop it" sort of film.
Don't get me wrong, this film has a number of dark moments scattered through out. It gets a little messed up in places. But it doesn't go so far as to become a gory mess (but it does have its moments). It also doesn't quite have the intensity of The Grudge. It's a lot easier film to watch for folks who are easily scared. The plot is simple enough to follow without any issues and it plays out all rather well thanks to its good pacing.
This release from Arrow Video is quite an impressive one. The picture quality is nice and sharp. It's also very detailed, a huge upgrade from the old muddy DVD copies. Of course, this collection isn't just the first movie but the second and third too. I wouldn't say One Missed Call 2-3 are mandatory watching, I didn't even know there was a third one until now. The sequel is a decent follow up and the third is definitely the weaker movie. Despite the lesser quality of the sequels, it's still nice to have them all here in one package.
In typical Arrow Video fashion, there's a lot of extras for fans of the movie to get through and is well worth the extra pennies. The bluray's are full of extras featuring new commentary tracks, lossless audio, an hour long archival documentary, video footage and interviews with the lead actors and director Takashi Miike etc. There's too much to list here but it's safe to say that it's worth looking at for fans of the One Missed Call.
One Missed Call is a great horror film, at least I think it is. The sequels don't hold up but are far from being bad or worse. This collection is another very well put together collection from Arrow Video and worth having for completionists and avid fans of the Asian horror genre.

Perfect collection if you're a fan of these films. Comes in a nice lenticular sleeve, and the cover in the case is reversible, revealing the original Japanese cover arts.
If you've not seen these films they are great if you're into J-horror and enjoy those types of films.
Also has a tonne of special content such as alrtenate endings.
Japanese audio only 5.1 and 2.0. English subs only.
