<良い所>

The Magnificent Kotobuki The Movie(劇場版)

A Visual Wonder. A Story We've Heard Many Times Before.
THE MAGNIFICENT KOTOBUKI is an anime in the same narrative wheelhouse as another I watched recently- GIRLS und PANZER. In fact, a number of people from GuP worked on this series as well. In reading reviews online from others on THE MAGNIFICENT KOTOBUKI, I must agree with some of the issues they take with the series. It's good and well produced in terms of visuals and especially the use of CG in the animating of the aircraft that are flown by the characters in this tale. A lot of work went into making the planes- piston-engined Japanese designs dating from the Second World War. In the documentaries that are included on the Blu-Ray, much time is spent explaining the process of creating the aircraft. A couple of fluff pieces involving the voice actors from the original production follow and left me frustrated that I didn't get the same insight on them as I did on the machines. And that speaks to what could use some improvement in the series.
The characters are stock types. No new personalities here. Their costumes are stock types as well; in some cases, cute, and in others made to measure for fan service. On the ground, these outfits may work one way, but in the air, I found them wholly impractical. Suspension of disbelief strained to the breaking point extended elsewhere. Plane crashes- and there are a lot of them- seem to leave every speaking character unhurt. In the last episode, the dogfights, which make up at least 30-40% of the running time in each story, go beyond the pale in terms of believability, reminding me of sniping veteran special effects masters in film had about modern CGI in movies today in CINEFEX a few years back. For all the pride the production team took in getting the dials to work, the flaps to flap and the radio wire to make that wonderful twang when the planes fly about, some real effort should also have been put into the real world physics of flying under bridges, down streets and a hundred other impossible things to make them a little more grounded in the reality of the world in which they exist.
The same for the characters and the costumes. I loved the small stage business of several characters at certain moments in the story, making me wonder how much of the character animation was also run through a computer using some kind of motion capture technique. When in the cockpits, hair on the girls flop about realistically in some scenes as the aircraft bank and turn. In others, it remains static, making for some inconsistencies in terms of the polish in those scenes. I also had trouble with the world building, why it looked the way it did and how the villains of the piece were, like the main characters, not really fleshed out. Some missed opportunities there to bring us into the environment. Subtitles- I watched the Japanese version- ran too quickly and sometimes overlapped with production 'notes' explaining something in the scene. I often had to back up the disk to catch text again in order to catch some important plot points.
Despite these issues, I recommend the series. Having got tanks and aircraft out of their system, I wonder what the creators of THE MAGNIFICENT KOTOBUKI will come up with next. Ships? I could go for that.

Flying Girls Are the Best!
There are a number of main characters, mostly young women/teenage girls.
Their boss lady hires them out for protection and other worthwhile jobs in this semi-dystopian world.
The planes they fly are reminiscent of WWII Japanese fighters, for the most part. A helium filled airship is their hangar.
All of them have some quirk or another. But they're tough, good, and as with most growing girls, have lots to learn.
There is political intrigue they get caught up in. Drama, action, new sights, and people they come to care about.
For me, this was a fun show, and kept me wanting to see the next episode! It's English Sub only, so if that's too much of a drawback for you, you're really missing out! I would love to see a second season of this show!

Great new dogfight graphics but lost the original story.

Loved the great new dogfight graphics in the movie but they chopped up the great original anime series so much that the story line is now very confusing. I'd recommend watching the anime series first so you can understand the story and then watch the movie to simply enjoy the upgraded combat scenes.
