Robert Mugge filmed jazz great Sun Ra and members of his eclectic ensemble on location in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. between 1978 and 1980. The resulting 60-minute film includes multiple public and private performances, poetry readings, a band rehearsal, interviews, and extensive improvisation. Transferred to HD from the original 16mm film and lovingly restored for the best possible viewing experience.

This marvellous DVD is the product of two years filming of the legendary Sun Ra and his Arkestra by documentary maker Robert Mugge.
The film combines Sun Ra's philosophical musings with stunning musical excerpts from the Arkestra in concert. As a bonus there are extended audio recordings of all the tunes.
I was lucky enough to see Sun Ra's UK debut on The South Bank, London in 1970 and , 'A Joyful Noise' is a reminder of that astonishing concert and also a great introduction to Ra's exotic musical universe.

Disc included the unexpected bonus of a soundtrack of the film. It was not in MP3 format however so it took a couple of conversions to rip it for my MP3 player.

I can't think of a better title for this movie. I enjoyed listening to Sun Ra, but after seeing this, I think it only deepened my appreciation for what he (and his music) was about.
