70〜80年代に大ヒットを連発して“アメリカン・プログレの雄”として名を馳せ、現在も活動を続けるスティクス。彼らが06年5月25日、クリーヴランドのコンテンポラリー・ユース・オーケストラ(CYO)と共に行ったライヴの模様がブルーレイ・ディスクで登場!

トミー・ショウ(G, Vo, Mandolin)、ジェイムス・ヤング(G, Vo)といった全盛期のメンバーを中心とした5人のスティクスの面々が、13歳~19歳の若い演奏家たちから成る総勢171名のオーケストラと共に、「Blue Collar Man」「Crystal Ball」「Boat On The River」といったお馴染みのナンバーや、ブラインド・フェイスの「Can't Find My Way Home」、ザ・ビートルズの「I Am The Walrus」などのカヴァー、そして「Just Be」「Everything All The Time」といった新曲、そしてヒット曲ばかりを集めたメドレーなどを披露。コンサートのラストにはオリジナル・メンバーのチャック・パノッゾ(B)もゲストとして登場するなどサプライズもあり。バンドとオーケストラの見事なコラボレーションによって描き出す!

Blue collar Man も　Renegadeも全盛期のStyxそのもの、オーケストラとの共演も他のヘビメタやプログレバンドのそれとは異なり、ロックのダイナミクスを妨げたりしない。自分はめったにレビューを書かないが、これは本当にすごい。特にI am the Walrusがすごい！　ビートルズのアレンジそのものをライブでやっている。この曲に込められているファンタジーや魔力がライブで、目に飛び込んでくる。驚きです。この曲のためだけでも購入する価値あり。

STYXとオーケストラのセッションライブ!今までかなりの数(BOOT含む)のSTYXのDVDを見てきたが、最高傑作かもしれない!STYXメンバーとオーケストラメンバー全員がスゴく楽しそうに演奏している。これはSTYXファンなら必ず買いましょう!!絶対に満足するハズ♪特にBORT ON THE RIVERは壮大な曲になっていて驚き!メドレーもサイコー。最後の方に少しお年を召したあの方も登場。往年のファンはニヤリ。それにしてもSTYXメンバーは年取ってもカッコいいなぁ。デニスファンの人はデニスがソロでオーケストラとセッションしてるCDもあるので検索して見てください。STYX日本来ないかなぁ…

Return to Paradiseが一番のお気に入りなので、すべてそれと比べてしまいます。
そうするとちょっと物足りないです。
Styxは大好きですが、Return to ParadiseとCaught in the Actの２本持っていれば
十分だと思います。

再生できないものを日本国内売るというのはいかがなものでしょうか。
ちゃんと確認しなかった自分が悪かったにしても・・・日本で再生しているものを販売して欲しいです。

なんでクリーブランドの学生達とコラボすることになったのか
その経緯は判らないのですが、まあ楽しそうに演奏しています。
ですがSTYXとしては、やはりデニスの不在は大きく、
リターントゥパラダイスのDVDの方が断然にすばらしいです。
STYXのコアなファン以外は、購入必要なしです。

「Kiss Symphony」がお気に入りなので購入。
一回見て、「ん〜」とうなってしまいました。
オーケストラ共演のレベルが違いますね。
観客も演奏している学生の身内みたいです。
これを最高傑作と思う気が知れません。

I very much enjoyed this disc. I think the audio and video are very good. The concert is very vibrant and everyone is enjoying themselves, the band, the orchestra and the audience.
The songs are very good, including the tracks I didn't know.
One could complain that they missed out certain songs that some people would like to hear, but I think the quality and enthusiasm for the songs played overcomes this.
I see some folks reviewing this are pissed off that Dennis De Young is not on here. All I can say to that is, why would he be, he hasn't been in the band for a number of years. The guy playing keyboards and doing a little singing is very good and really doesn't deserve to be attacked at all. He has a more rock vocal approach than De Young who tended towards a more broadway kind of vocal, not a critcism, just an observation.
If you like the songs listed on here I see no reason at all why you would not like this concert.
I highly recommend this show for lovers of Styx and concert movies. If you only liked Dennis De Young I believe he has a concert movie of his own, but I can't comment on that as I haven't seen it yet.

Styx avec un orchestre symphonique ! Il y a une telle pêche dans ce concert, pas étonnant lorsque l'on voit la moyenne d'âge des gamins qui jouent dans l'orchestre symphonique !!!! Les morceaux du groupe sont sublimés par cette fusion "Rock/Classique"! J'adore ce live et comme j'aurais aimé y être !!!!!!

I would recomend this disk to anyone. If you are an older Styx fan you will love all the hits and even a few of the new songs. If you dont know Styx very well, this disk is a good introduction. Blu-ray picture quality is good. Everyone is having fun at this concert. Its sort of fun to see that Styx has aged along with us. The young orchestra ads a great sound to the tunes we all know. The Orchestra are young musicians but they are very good. The show feels as though they are playing music with us and not at us. There is not a boring moment, even the 2 or 3 new songs grow on you after 2 or 3 plays. Playing it on a surround sound system is best. I am 53 and this concert on my big screen gets me rocking like a teenager.

Wow is all I can say, wish I'd bought this DVD sooner.. I'm in my 50's and have always loved their powerful melodic songs, I've only been to see them once but this DVD makes you wish you were there like no other music DVD that I've watched. It's great to see such enthusiasm from band and orchestra alike and as the CYO director said, they are made for each other in so many ways.
Whether you are already a Styx fan or have only just discovered them, I'd say buy this DVD asap and drop everything ( as I did when it landed on my doormat ) sit back with the volume up as loud as possible and be enthralled, amazed and in awe of the musicianship on display from a true supergroup at the top of their game.
The camera work gets 9/10 for me and only missed a perfect score because the camera didn't always follow Tommy shaw on his solo's.. as a guitarist I want to see every note as it's played! That aside this is a fantastic DVD to own and spend 2 hours + with, and to watch over and over, as I most certainly will.
I also bought the Styx - Grand Illusion & Pieces of eight Blu Ray along with this one, and though that is okay, it's not a patch on this one.

Als Rockband bist Du ja heutzutage niemand mehr, wenn Du es nicht auch einmal mit Orchester getan hast. Im Falle von Styx kam die Einladung interessanterweise seitens der Klassik-Instrumentaler. Zweite Besonderheit: Beim "Contemporary Youth Orchestra" (CYO) spielen 115 ausnahmslos junge Leute zwischen 13 und 19, weitere 56 singen im Chor. Das Ergebnis ist um Meilen besser als mancher sterile Auftritt mit eingekauften Profi-Geigern vieler anderer Rockstars. Die jungen Leute harmonieren perfekt mit Styx. In der riesigen Konzerthalle von Cleveland machen sie mächtig Party - und zu wem passt das besser als zu den ewig gut gelaunten Styx? Die Stimmung ist grandios, da wird in jeder Orchesterpause mitgeklatscht und mitgesungen, Bläser und Streicher in die Luft geschwungen. Beim einzigen Song, der ganz auf Orchester verzichtet, nämlich I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR, einem von vier Stücken des 2005er-Coveralbums "Big Bang Theory", hält es sogar keinen einzigen auf dem Sitz. Die Chemie zwischen Band und Orchester stimmt aber auch musikalisch. Neben allerlei Bombast-Unterstützung für Songs wie MISS AMERICA oder CRYSTAL BALL, zu dem Tommy Shaw auch noch eine Geschichte parat hat, spielen die Geigen, Bratschen, Posaunen, Trompeten, Querflöten und, und, und... auch ein paar Melodien von Keyboard und Gitarren in den Rockern BLUE COLLAR MAN und TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS und haben mit einem Intro zu FOOLING YOURSELF auch einen echten Solo-, Pardon, Multi-Auftritt. Der Chor tritt nur punktuell in Erscheinung, z.B. bei MISS AMERICA, RENEGADE und dem erstmals auf einer Live-Veröffentlichung enthaltenen ONE WITH EVERYTHING, das den Stil der Band seit dem Weggang von Dennis DeYoung mit einem Mix aus druckvollem und unverweichlichtem Rock und wunderbaren, vielstimmig dargebotenen Melodien formidabel präsentiert. Und es gibt noch mehr Premieren - mit der verträumten Ballade JUST BE (mit David-Gilmour-Feeling) und EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME (schon wieder so ein facettenreicher Rocker mit Styx-Patent) werden zwei brandneue Songs uraufgeführt. Absolutes Highlight ist aber das viertelstündige STYX CYO MEDLEY, in das Drummer Todd Sucherman an die 20 Styx-Songs älteren Datums gepackt hat. MIDNIGHT RIDE, SING FOR THE DAY, GREAT WHITE HOPE, ROCKIN' THE PARADISE, MAN IN THE WILDERNESS und viele andere Stücke sind dabei, teils mit Gesang, teils nur instrumental. Die ganze Show zeigt zwei unwiderstehliche Stunden lang Styx, wie man sie noch nie erlebt hat, denn sie teilen die Bühne mit 171 jungen Leuten, die halb so alt sind wie ihre Karriere. Und auch an Spielfreude haben sie nichts eingebüßt, genau so wenig wie die Stimmen an Präzision und Gefühl. Die DVD bietet im Vergleich zur CD 17 statt 13 Tracks; und JUST BE in Live- statt in Studioversion. Das Bonusmaterial besteht aus den obligatorischen Wie/Wo/Wer/Wann/Warum-Interviews, einer schön gemachten Slideshow mit Bildern von Proben und Gig, der "Quake Cam", die das Medley als Schlagzeug-Studie komplett aus einer nahen Sicht auf Todd Sucherman zeigt, und schließlich aus den beiden Weihnachts-Songs RING THE BELLS und ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS, die auch bei dem Gig im Mai 2006 (!) gespielt wurden. Das einzig gute an ihnen ist allerdings, dass sie aus dem eigentlichen Konzert rausgeschnitten wurden. "One With Everything" ist ein Pflichtkauf für alle aufgeschlossenen Styx-Fans - es erwartet sie reichlich Neues, viel Entstaubtes und ein unvergessliches Treffen der Generationen bei einem Rocks-Meets-Klassik-Abend der besonderen Sorte.
